check the permissions of this file:

ls -l /etc/fstab
usually the output should look like this:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 684 27. Jun 11:56 /etc/fstab

Mine looks like

[cool@localhost ~]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost cool]# ls -l /etc/fstab
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 534 2007-06-28 00:54 /etc/fstab
[root@localhost cool]#

The rights of your /etc/fstab are already correct, don't change them. How are you trying to edit the file? Did you start the editor from the same terminal where you gave the "su -" command?
