I've never used Linux before, and just bought an old computer just to try it out. I've done all the research that I can. I found Wine which will let me use windows software. Does this work fine or is it real jumpy and unstable? I only want to use Microsoft Office and Autodesk AutoCAD, along with the web browsing and email I can get through Mozilla. Is there anything else I should know before installing Fedora?

The computer I'm using is a Dell Dimension 3000, 2.8Ghz P4, 256mb or RAM, and 40 gig harddrive.

I doubt you can get autocad to work. It would be nice, I agree. I use autocad everyday. See this page:

Older versions of office should work with codeweavers (this costs money):

I've never done any of this myself, but I hope it helps you.

But on the other hand there is openoffice that can open and read/write MS office files. Still don't know about CAD software though.

Even windows won't run autocad well with that little ram... I wouldn't plan on having that. I would also recommend not using MS Office. Honestly, the linux offerings are better products. They use the same file formats and have better features (OpenOffice.org) or are far more responsive with less GUI clutter (abiword), and all are much more stable.

It's more like Microsoft Office, and it's written in Java too just like OpenOffice. It consists same functions like Microsoft Word and Excel and PowerPoint.
