Hello, I'm trying to learn about MySql from a book titled "The Definitive Guide to MySql 5". The book's instructions say to remove PHP4 and install PHP5 in /usr/local/src. I currently have Mysql installed and working with Rails and QT4 and my question is: will following these instructions break anything?

Thanks in Advance,
gr

Which Fedora release are you using? FC6 includes PHP 5.1 so there's no PHP4 to remove.

I'm using FC5. I'm pretty sure it includes PHP4.

$ locate php4
/usr/share/swig/1.3.24/php4
/usr/share/swig/1.3.24/php4/php4.swg
/usr/share/swig/1.3.24/php4/php4kw.swg
/usr/share/swig/1.3.24/php4/php4run.swg
/usr/share/swig/1.3.24/php4/std_common.i
/usr/share/swig/1.3.24/php4/std_map.i
/usr/share/swig/1.3.24/php4/std_pair.i
/usr/share/swig/1.3.24/php4/std_string.i
/usr/share/swig/1.3.24/php4/std_vector.i
/usr/share/swig/1.3.24/php4/typemaps.i
/usr/share/swig/1.3.24/php4/utils.i

Thanks,
gr

FC5 release contains PHP 5.1.2, FC5 Updates has PHP 5.1.6. Having a directory called "php4" somewhere in the system doesn't mean anything. Use "rpm -q php" to see the installed version.

You're absolutely right. Turns out that the php package isn't even installed. Thanks for your help.
