View Full Version : Startup in X

Hi, I have this wierd problem where my fedora does not startup in x windows.
Instead, it goes right to the command prompt. When I try: startx, I get this error:

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again.

So I remove the file /tmp/.X0-lock then type: startx and it works. Is it running in the background or something?

How can I make it so it will automatically start up in x windows instead of doing this everytime?

Are you booting with rhgb?
Are you using Gnome or KDE?
Does the logon prompt blink a few times before settling down?

Are you running FC6

If you are booting without rhgb and running Gnome and it does NOT blink at the prompt then try

logon as root

Have you tried

Ctrl + Alt + F7

Thanks for the replys!
Ctrl + Alt + F7 and gdm-restart both work as they bring me to x windows without deleting the lock and tryping startx.

But if I restart, I have to do Ctrl + Alt + F7 everytime, its not a big deal but is there a way I can fix it to do it automatically?

I am using FC6 and gnome.

I have had this problem with FC6 on install only, as soon as I install the updates it normally corrects itself .
