View Full Version : Add/remove software from CDRom instead of Internet

I use CentOS 5 instead of Fedora since I'm too lazy to keep up with the pace of Fedora. When I add software from 'Applications, Add/Remove Software', the package manager download the software from the Internet, which is too slow. I have the six installation CDs of CentOS 5 so I want to the package managerr to add software from CDROM.
I search the web and someone said the following command may help:
yum --disablerepo=\* --enablerepo=c5-media <command>
But I'd rather add software using Package manager GUI, How can I do this? Thanks!

There was a thread explaining how to do this with createrepo.... here (http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=153783)

Thanks for your reply, giulix! I have to say I'm new to Linux and totally lost in the thread you provide. Firing a command in the terminal is a nightmare to me, that's why I prefer GUI. I am not intend to create a repository, just tell the Package manager to read software from the CDROM. That's it. Could you please give me a precise summary to my question, thanks.

The problem with using the GUI tools is that they need the repositories to be set up in advance, as far as I know... but I never use the GUI, so it's entirely possible that a graphic tool which lets you set up and choose the repositories to install from is available somewhere. Hopefully someone will come to the rescue...

Another problem I foresee is having several media to install from, which adds the complication of switching from one disk to another. Probably it would be easier if you had one DVD with all the software on it.

It's tricky with the cds, pretty easy with a dvd http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showpost.php?p=736602

There's a problem with yum in fc6, it can't handle the url type 'media' on the fedora discs, so you can't install stuff from the discs without recreating the repo, http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=153437

With a dvd you can just create the metadata and then point to the disc, but with the cds you need to copy all the rpms to your hard disk as well.

In FC7 this has been fixed, and you can just point yum at the install disc using the method that worked in FC5 eg see http://www.city-fan.org/tips/YumRepoFromImages
