Do you have libdvdcss (libdvdread, libdvdnav, libdvdplay) installed?

Try out VLC, it can play most formats.

Some of the newer DVDs have weird DRM stuff built in. Casino Royal, the new Bond movie was supposed to be having problems with some older stand alone DVD players. Try VLC. I think its in the Livna repo. You may need to download libdecss too.

lol... actually is the new 007 releases that won't even play... they show a very short MGM logo scene then quit...

I have used xine for a bit and like it; you can use the dvd menus and titles, and chapters. There are several diffrent versions for it totem-xine is the one I usually install.

I'm not sure you'll be able to get that DVD to work, they posted about this on slashdot a while back;

http://slashdot.org/articles/07/04/15/1914248.shtml

it seems that sony has no intention of fixing it... I'm not sure what to tell you - can you take it back? Ring Sony and demand that they give you a version that you can actually watch (they won't but it could be fun to shout at them). On the slashdot link they link to a forum where people were saying about this in more detail... if you look at the links in the story, then go to the last posts someone might have been able to find a work-around... if none of that works could you try ripping it? (so long as your not America, if you are then you have so many stupid laws to make it illegal to view what you paid for that you'd as good have just started out pirating in the first place...)

I think there are bugs with dvd playback in the latest Mplayer in the livna repo (mplayer-1.0-0.72.20070325svn.lvn6)

I have a matrix dvd which will only play in german, if I try to change the audio it gives errors about "Too many video packets in buffer"

Hence I use vlc (or xine) :)

That has to annoy the retailers. Hopefully the number of returns will make even them think twice before doing this again.

:D
