Hi
I'm not a total nebie with linux but am having problems communicating with the modem. I am running Fedora 6 and have an external Dynalink 56K e-modem III plugged into /dev/ttyS0.

I have set /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS0

running dmesg shows that only ttyS0 exists on the machine as follows
serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
00:08: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

I have tried system-config-network client & kppp client - in both cases I get no response from the modem - it cannot be detected.

I have run
echo "atdt xxxxxxx" > /dev/ttyS0
with no result (trying . /dev/ttyS1 confirms that there is only one serial port)

Any suggestions would be gratefully received. I want to set the machine up as a fax server, but until I can actually get a response from the modem there is no pint in moving onto the next stage.
