View Full Version : can dpms be setup to wake the monitor only from keyboard?

I want my LCD monitor on FC6 to only wake up from dpms suspend/standby/off
if I press a key and not if the slightest vibration triggers the mouse.
So basically is there a way to have dpms in Xorg ignore the
mouse and just watch the keyboard?

Well, AFAICT, there's no user configurable option to do that. But, of course,
we can always modify the source. So, for a quick fix, apply something like the
attached patch to do the trick.

Also consider to file a request to the Xorg developers.

Wow, what a great patch. How do I apply it?

You'd think someone at Xorg would have thought of this already.

There's always the option of setting mouse-sensitivity to low in gnome-mouse-properties -> Motion (you can kepp typing 'xset dpms force off' in a terminal and check mouse sensitivity as you adjust the slider)

On a terminal, cd to the xorg-server source dir and type

patch -p1 < the_patch_file

Or add the patch file to the spec file of the xorg-server srpm, then rebuild
the rpm.

True, you can configure the mouse sensitivity, but even with the lowest
sensitivity, a single mouse motion event still wakes-up the monitor from
dpms suspend/standby/off state.

yup, the sensitivity in gnome-mouse-properties has no effect on the wake-up event.
(I think I got suspicious after a dozen or so 'xset dpms force standby' commands with the slider at either end of the scale)

thanks for the patch info.

I found that on my system which has a optical (LED) mouse, you can negate the
mouse waking up the system by simply flipping it on it's back
so the LED is pointing up in the air. I just get tired of flipping the mouse over when
I leave and return so I decided to look for a programmatic way. Also
sometimes just turning the light on in the room will trigger the mouse.

Can anyone confirm that this patch works? I use a program on my Windows machine to control the sleep state of my monitors in just the same fashion. The program in Windows has an option for Forbid the mouse from waking up the monitor or exiting the screen saver. I use it for just the same reason as the poster of this thread. If it works then great, but if not, where should I go from here?

rkoI've been looking all over for something like this! Is it possible to disable wake up on keyboard or mouse events now? If not, could someone please help me create a new patch?
