You can read a pretty good writeup (http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-1035-6113711.html) of "Password Aging" which will do as you describe and provide the added benefit of forcing periodic changes for security. And of course, there's always google (http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+password+aging&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=Swiftfox:en-US:unofficial&client=firefox-a)

I use webmin to manage my accounts and passwords, it offers a facility to force the password changes by date and avoids all the command line entries. If you want to check it out, go here (http://www.webmin.com/)
