I have a 17 inch Samsung Syncmaster LCD Monitor (740N)

The fedora 6 installation does not probe my monitor automatically and while installation goes to text mode even when i select graphics mode.
I tried other flavours of linux in order to get xorg.conf file. Some of them does detect my monitor. However the maximum resolution i am able to get is 640*480.
I tried to manually change xorg.conf and put in resolution 1024 * 768. But then the display for Xwindows does not come. Can anybody help me with settings for my monitor to get a higher display resolution
