I was put off ubuntu quite early when the installer wouldn't work in graphical mode, and even in text mode insisted on installing an ati driver for my X800 which caused a complete system halt. When I finally got it installed it failed to install grub and (unbeliveably) my motherboard cmos got reset upon reboot.

After finally getting things working via manually editing grub in fedora I was quite impressed to see that it natively installed a driver for my Netgear/Realtek usb wifi adapter. Unfortunately this seems to be very basic (no led operation on the adapter) and after several minutes of running updates it just locked up.

I have ubuntu as a test install but my initial impressions are not good.

I read that many people have much better experiences, but after trying it and OpenSuse, I'm far happier with fedora for now.

Being completely honest, to absolutely new users I always recommend Ubuntu, as the Live CD install is really really nice and not having the complication of a separate root account is less alien to newbies.

I run Fedora on my main desktop, though, because I'm a little bit more advanced, and I want a 'real' root user, and, most importantly, I want cutting edge software delivered to my desktop as it gets released.

(I also run Ubuntu as a secondary OS on another machine, though).

Bob, I heartily agree.

But ... do we really need to do this all over again?

If we do, I suppose that's ok too. I've got a couple of flaming nasty zingers that I never got the chance to launch in the last one. They're all primed, qued up, ignited and ready to fire. :p

Personally, I think your post was a complete waste of time and server space. So just to annoy everyone I'm posting this reply!

Edit: I see you posted this under 'Reviews' Umm, not much of a review was it? I don't see you winning any journalistic prizes for that feeble effort and I think most tech rags want a little more detail if you're looking for a job writing for them.

Boy, I'm a sarcastic old git today, aren't I?

Actually, I dare the OP to post the same message in the Ubuntu forums and see what kind of reaction he gets. But I've always been a wicked old git! :D

Not bad for a beginner

Anyone got the balls to post this on a windows forum and tell them that Vista is light years behind Linux

Well, everyone's a tad nasty for a Friday! So, since this is well covered in that other thread and we're not getting sweetness and joy on this one, I'm closing it before someone takes offense. If you love Ubuntu, by all means use it. If you also love Fedora, dual boot or buy a second machine or periodically dump one and install the other one. Whatever... have a nice life and stay away from the underside of those bridges, gold coins are illegal in most countries.
