I did a yum -y install postgresql postgresql-server php-pgsql

and then

/sbin/service postgresql start
Starting postgresql service: [FAILED]

Then cp postgresql.conf.sample postgresql.conf
cp: overwrite `postgresql.conf'? y

cp pg_hba.conf.sample pg_hba.conf
cp: overwrite `pg_hba.conf'? y

I still get

/sbin/service postgresql start
Starting postgresql service: [FAILED]

Why is this not starting. I am using FC6

Errors in /var/log/messages? What does it say in /var/lib/pgsql/pgstartup.log? Although they don't interfere with my installation, could it be a firewall or an selinux issue?

I know it doesn't help, but I just did exactly what you are doing about 2 weeks ago and had no issues getting the server up.

Daniel

Edit: There are additional log files in /var/lib/pgsql/data/pg_log.

thanks for the location of the log file... I found the problem to be tcpip_socket... I just removed this line and it started...
