Hello, All!

I've been reading a lot a hanging around these forums, but I'm still pretty new to Linux. One question that's been on my mind since the begining is: What kind of performance can I expect from my machine (specs below) with FC6?

It seems to me, from what I've read, that I may be mildly above average (for a desktop) as to running tasks. I've cut as many daemons as I safely can, from what I've read. But the glxgears results baffle me - I expected way higher output, even with some other tasks running ('top' snapshot below). The first set of glxgears is with the graphic box displayed, the second is with it hidden. BTW, I use the Livna RPMs nVidia drivers - they seem to be the best.

[Vince@presario ~]$ glxgears
4289 frames in 5.0 seconds = 857.733 FPS
5432 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1086.306 FPS
5671 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1134.183 FPS
5799 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1159.054 FPS
5466 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1093.145 FPS
5612 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1122.118 FPS

[Vince@presario ~]$ glxgears
4717 frames in 5.0 seconds = 943.393 FPS
8214 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1640.958 FPS
8780 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1753.828 FPS
8812 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1762.385 FPS
8779 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1753.760 FPS
8970 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1793.938 FPS
8794 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1758.696 FPS

So the questions are: what is a reasonable average for running processes on a desktop? and what kind of graphics performance (i.e., glxgears) can I expect with this machine?

Thanx, Vince

Most of these taskes are sleeping.

get rid of some server servises.

you got GL ......download a gl game like nexuiz , and see how your video card works.

enable desktop effects in preferences.. see if that works..

I don't know?

You have a pretty good machine, at least better than mine and FC6 performs excellent in mine so I believe it will run even better in yours. Besides you got an NVIDIA card, enabling Beryl and desktop effects should be straightforward (alike with ATI).
Joe.

Thanx for responding guys. But I was hoping to get some numbers to compare with. Specifically, approximately how many processes running on a typical desktop machine (no server/services)? That includes "sleeping" processes, etc. And framerate for glxgears or some other benchmark? I already have desktop effects on, seems ok, but when I try GL-117 Flight Simulator, I get lots of "framerate too low" warnings. Seems sluggish on some other graphics-intense games, especially with Firefox or some other resource-hungry program open. Some programs load slow. I'm trying to get an idea about whether or not I have a problem, or if I'm just trying to run too many things at once.

Thanx again, Vince

Your glxgear numbers look fine as far as I can tell... The only recommendation I would make is to bump up your RAM. 512Mb is fine as a desktop system, but once you start playing resource intensive games like GL117, you'll want at least 1Gb, especially if you want other programs like Firefox open.

(If Firefox is eating too many resources, you might check out Swiftfox: http://getswiftfox.com )

Thanx, harp2812 - that "Swiftfox" looks like a real winner, especially for my back-up machine.
