Running FC6 - After about 300 MB of yum updates near the first of Februrary, I lost the mouse and GNOME. KDE works with the keyboard.

In general, how does one recover from a bad yum update or protect themselves against it?

1) Make sure you don't have multiple 3rd party repos enabled; (livna, dries, atrpms...) Updates between these repos will often overwrite each other.

2) Don't do a blind update - actually look at what programs are being updated so you can be prepared if something does go wrong. If you know what you're updating, you know where the problem might be.

3) If you updated the kernel, make sure you're booting into the right kernel in grub.

4) Replace the battery in your wireless mouse ;-)
