Does any one know of a way of opening Microsoft office files on FC6? This would be useful since all the computers at my university use Microsoft software.

Yep, I can vouch for this. My son's school is all windows/office but he opens and saves his assignments from home on his FC6 machine using OpenOffice just fine.

Yes, if you want it to be default you have to specify it in the preferences.

You dont have to set it as default , you just use the save as and choose the M$ file type you wish to save as.

Well, I was talking from an ease of use standpoint. All my son's files are M$ format so it's easier for him to have it set to M$ in preferences than have to remember to use 'Save as' (Which he did a few times before I set it)
