newbe here.
Is it possible to run both desktops on the same machine?

if so how does one switch back and forth between them?

Yes, it's completely possible to run Gnome and KDE side-by-side very happily.

To switch between them, simply log off, click Session on the logon screen and choose KDE or Gnome before logging back in! It's that easy.

To install KDE (or Gnome, or even Xfce), head to the Package Manager and tick the relevant box.
