I finally figured out how to change colors on gtk2 themes but anytime i use a dark theme or theme with dark elements something goes wrong. A couple examples of this is having a white combobox with white text (this happened on one I edited myself)or white on white on some web pages (this one happens on most dark themes).

Certain applications look better with dark backgrounds to me, but I don't want to lose functionality by using a dark-theme system-wide.

Xchat and Nautilus look and feel better with dark backgrounds and while both offer custom colors these leave certain elements or controls at their default gtk2 theme colors.

I read somewhere that the kde desktop will let you use different themes on a per-application setting, is this true? Is this possible under gnome, how would use different gtk2 themes on a per-application setting?
