Im comfused about the ATI drivers that are out there.

How many ATI drivers are there that enable 3D and which are the best to use for preformance.

Ps: a lot of the how to's seem to be useless as most of the console commands dont work.

ATI and livna's fglrx have about the same performance

The opensource radeon driver that comes with fedora has less performance and doesn't work withh all cards, but supports AIGLX for desktop effects in xorg (You need to use XGL with the fglrx drivers)

so that's 3 drivers :)

try

su -
rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/6/i386/livna-release-6-1.noarch.rpm
yum install kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx
yum update kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx
aticonfig --initial

reboot

If you get any errors post the output

Ok theres no direct rendering can you post output from this command

rpm -qa --queryformat "%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}.%{ARCH}\n"|grep kernel|sort

Edit

you need a i686 kernel for the ati driver to work if it is i586 check this link

Ati dont work well with the XEN kernel is that the one you are using.?

Well thats the weird thing, when i first installed fedora core 6 it installed teh XEN kernal, which is odd, isnt XEN meant to be a SMP type intel processsor? i have a basic P4 CPU.

I installed wine and it sais it required the normal i686 kernal.

Is i686 fro P4 processors?

Yes i686 is correct for your P4

I have never used xen I believe its for VM

can you post the output from this

Hi

libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 (0x42906000) should be /usr/lib/ati-fglrx/libGL.so.1

download the attached file ati-fglrx.conf

su
cp ati-fglrx.conf /etc/ld.so.conf.d/
su -
ldconfig
rm /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
ln -sf /usr/lib/ati-fglrx/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1

reboot and you should have direct rendering

Ambiguous-69

okay it sais direct rendering is on now :D

Now for the questions

1. Why wasnt the extra lines needed in the xconfig there when i selected that driver for my video card configuration

2. What messed it up so bad that the sym link was wrong

3. Why did i need to install that extra file and link it, why wasnt it included with the drivers i downloaded

God dam graphic card companies, i purchased a product hence they are technically obliged to create drivers of equal quality to all OS's. This would be the case if consumer affairs wernt a bunch of fat lazy slobs and did their job. Like when tehy tried to lower fuel prices here in australia they were successful for about 3 days after they stopped watching the fuel companies things went back up to their high prices. Just makes you sick of humanity or in my casewant a nuclear war to start so all corporate companies colapse and technology is deminished and started over again.

Technology was made to make our life easier not to make it more of a pain in the ass.

Here are is my FPS using fglx_gears

3050 frames in 5.0 seconds = 610.000 FPS
2694 frames in 5.0 seconds = 538.800 FPS
2662 frames in 5.0 seconds = 532.400 FPS
2679 frames in 5.0 seconds = 535.800 FPS

Got another problem now, world of warcraft sais, "Unable to run in 3D" after ive got 3D working. The only changes i made to world of warcraft are the ones suggested in Wine forum.

2. What messed it up so bad that the sym link was wrong = I think selinux stops the file being written.
3. Why did i need to install that extra file and link it, why wasnt it included with the drivers i downloaded = probably the same reason as number 2 , I dont ever run selinux and rarely get this problem.

1. Why wasnt the extra lines needed in the xconfig = could you clarify this point?

As for you wine problem wine problem did you install like this.

yum install wine*

* is a wildcard an will drag in all the wine packages about 15 in total

Here are is my FPS using fglx_gears

2679 frames in 5.0 seconds = 535.800 FPS

these FPS look fine ( my x1600 will do around 750)

1. Why wasnt the extra lines needed in the xconfig = could you clarify this point?

what i meant by that was why wernt these lines originally in the xorg.conf when i installed those fglx packages, why didnt the packages just replace teh original xorg.cfg with a new one that contains teh following quoted section and back it up? Or are rpms just nto capable of such a simple thing?

With Wine i already have it installed, I had it installed prior to posting the question on the forums, its the main reason i wanted to figure out what drivers to use beause i was getting 5fps runnign the game under wine, so i knew i did something wrong settign up the video card. Would i have to reintsall Wine after making all the changes we did?

The outputs look fine no problems there ( I used to have a sapphire RADEON 9600 XT )

I will need to check your xorg.conf again so could you post its contents again.

what sort of problems did you have with the other howto's?

Ps: a lot of the how to's seem to be useless as most of the console commands dont work.

Thanks leigh for all these tips, they helped me a lot to get WoW running a bit better; but ironically not in OpenGL, because now I'm having the same problem as Ambiguous-69 -- in that the game says it was unable to start up 3D acceleration, when I try to run it with "-opengl". Prior to this, the game was running in OpenGL, but at an unplayable frame-rate and with LOTS of corrupted graphics. I'm running it via CrossOver btw.

p.s. I also have direct rendering = yes, OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc., OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 XT Generic

edit: i take that back, something very weird is going on:
1. the first time i tried running it after the last reboot, with "-opengl", it could not start 3D acceleration
2. then after starting it with the default launcher (no extra commands), it ran pretty good, but with slow frame-rates while moving out in the open, and a minor graphical bug in the interface
3. next, i ran it with "-d3d", and it was *horrible* (utterly corrupt graphics, minuscule frame-rate etc.)
4. next, i ran it with "-opengl" again, but this time it was more like step.2. than step.1. In other words, it runs good, it doesn't have the graphical bug in the interface... BUT i get absolutely no response from the keyboard during the game. The irony...

Running it the usual [d3d] way now works to some extent, but there are a few corrupt graphics (2D interface sprites), and i get lousy frame-rates out in the open, especially when I don't stand still. Which I obviously don't do very often :p

Right now I'd rather play it in d3d, if not for these problems, but if you still have any ideas left, I'd appreciate more tips for getting GL up and running.

You have OpenGl working for your ati card, so the fault probably lies with wine

try

su -

and add this section

Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"

I already had that part in xorg.conf, and eventually I realized that the keyboard is actually working just fine in the game's main menu, but not after loading the game world. Which, obviously enough, means that it wasn't a drivers/configuration issue.

At fault was SCIM ("Smart" *cough* Common Input Method), some proggie I was using for switching between EN / JP language. And for some reason, it messes up when least expected -- it sort of happens in Opera browser as well.

Anyway, the point is all is fine and well after removing SCIM. The sound is still buggy, but I've found some topics about that already and it's no big deal for me. Cheers!

Well it gets even stranger, because one reboot later fglrxinfo says the openGL stuff is back to Mesa instead of ATi, and "direct rendering" in glxinfo is once again "no".

I don't remember changing anything in the system, other than uninstalling that SCIM thingie. I might as well start copy-pasting commands from page 1 again :P

^ i presume this is the same file you attached a couple of pages earlier, but only now I see that the file downloaded by Opera has only 10 bytes. And that was the one i used in the first place during this "tutorial".

I got it again now via Firefox, and it's 21 bytes as it should be. Restarted x, all's good with direct rendering & ATi, game's ok... yep, hopefully that was it. I'll get back after another restart, just to be sure.

edit: indeed no more problems. Many thanks once again!

Hello,
I have similar problems to those mentioned above. After a clean install of FC6 I have tried to install ATI drivers from livna repositories, but the fglrxinfo kept informing me that it's using the mesa drivers. After several unsuccessful attempts at fixing this using the info I've found on various forums, I gave up and installed the Ati Proprietary Drivers, and after some cosmetic changes I was finally able to change my resolution above 800x600. The GLXgears test had slightly better results, and the video test in Cedega informed that it has passed the openGL test, but it failed to initiate the 3D renderer... After several failed attempts I have removed the ATI drivers and installed fglrx again according to instructions in this post, and the other on these forums (http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=738710#post738710). Right now I'm using xorg.conf provided by Leigh123, and am again able to change the resolution, I pass the openGL test in Cedega, but I still don't get the 3D support :(

I would be very grateful if any of you guys could help me out with this... I'm struggling with it since monday, and I'm slowly loosing the patience to continue this.
