Hi,

Please, can someone tell me for what reason the X-server dies whenever I try to watch a DVD or a Div-X movie or a mpeg or such? It happens with Xine, VLC, Totem and all the videoplayers I've installed.

(I disabled comosite extension on my X server cause I'm an ATI X1300 user who wants accelerated graphics and it seems to be no other choice)

(X64- SMP kernel)

thanks,

Seve

Hello:
The first place to look is in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
and check for errors or warnings about the configuration of X on your installation.
To find out more about vlc crashing X then open a terminal and type vlc and see what if any errors are present.
Also, where did you install vlc, totem etc. from and do you have all the correct plugins installed for your players.

it seems to be something related with the fglrx kernel module for my ATI. For some reason, if I modify Xorg.conf and instead of loading "fglrx" I pick up "vesa" videoplayers work fine and I see div-x, wmv, dvd and everything correctly... so I think it's not a plugin error or such but ati's commercial drivers.

thanks Seve :)

Hello:
Did you install the ati driver rpm from livna ?
http://rpm.livna.org/rlowiki/UsingLivna

yum install kmod-fglrx

if not, un-install the driver you have now and and give the livna rpm a shot

The ati 64 bit driver can't to xv (Xvideo) if you change the media player video driver from xv to opengl it should fix the problem.
