Do you need special hardware to do this, or will any card/monitor work?

I have a few things I'd like to experiment with this on.
One is my laptop
ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]
with a 15 inch screen
its a hp compaq nc6000

and I was wondering if I could rotate the screen?

I tried putting in [Option "Rotate" "CCW"] into xorg.conf
but the xorg log says
[Option "Rotate" is not used]
Do I need to install a module or something?

Are you talking about something like this or do you mean something else when you say rotating display?

something else I'm talking about just rotating it 90 degrees at a time so if I turn a monitor sideways it looks good or upside down it looks good ...

Well I've never needed something like so I've never looked into doing something like that.
