you can use cron to schedule tasks that will be used according to the time you specify
i mean, tasks that will be executed every hour, or every day, week, month.
for that you can check /etc/cron.daily cron.hourly etc.
to load something just on boot you dont use cron.

you can logout to save your session state and then when you login again it will be displayed

you can also add or remove boot-up services editing your /etc/rc.d/rc5.d folder for example
to change your runlevel 5 initial services. ( you can use system-config-services )

you can create a shell script and add it to your /etc/rc.d/init.d folder
for example. and create a link to it in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d
to use it with others runlevels you can do the same steps for each folder, like /etc/rc.d/rc3.d etc.

you can't

but you could try adding a line to /etc/rc.local

echo 'hello world'

it may only be displayed for an instant

maybe create a text file with you message and

cat textfile.txt

in /etc/rc.local

and then a sleep command
