View Full Version : FC6 and Radeon 9550.... Im stubborn

Ok, been reading all the threads on ATI and FC5 and 6..... my brain hurts.

I am a linux noob, been toying with it off and on since Redhat 6.

Im running FC6 on an AMD Athalon64 with 1gb ram, a radeon 9550 pro, WD Caviar 80GB HD dual boot WinXP (ya its true sorry) 60gb partition, and FC6 20gb partition with a bootloader. ok

So I downloaded the 8.31.5.run driver from ATI's website after a clean install and that's when I found out its not a simple installation!

After I install the drivers, I open a terminal window and type: aticonfig --initial and all goes well. I reboot and then x wont start.

I checked my modules and I dont have XFree86-Mesa-libGL and XFree86-libs file that ATi's website says have to be installed for the 64bit drivers to work. I assume that this is the root of my problem. Can someone please set me straight on where to get these two files and where to put them.

Thanks so much

Use the livna rpms instead. Just head over to rpm.livna.org and install the livna-release.noarch.rpm package. Then open Pirut and first do a search on 'yum' (without quotes), select both the 'kmod' plugin and the 'fastest mirror' plugin, now do a search on fglrx and select the kmod to match your kernel and the the other package which matches the kmod fglrx version for the X11 stuff... I'd strongly suggest you to backup your Xorg.conf file every time you mess with it so you can roll back to a working configuration.

I hope you'll be able to get your Xorg.conf to a working state, I never allowed the ATi configuartor to fully overwrite the file, and instead only copied what it was needed (i.e the Section "Device" part). It's been a while since I last used ATi on Linux, though, so I'm not much of a helping hand there... However for drivers, you're better off using the Livna ones.

Here is my /etc/X11/Xorg.conf.backup file. I uninstalled the ati propietary driver and x starts up just fine, but I cant go deeper than 800x600 and no 3d accel.

No, with the device driver stating there "fglrx" you won't have 3D accel, and probably the "dynamic modes" of Xorg 7.1 aren't taken advantage of ;)

Howeve, you may try to change the driver to "radeon" which on your card will have mild 3D acceleration (not on pair to the fglrx, which is to say a LOT, as the fglrx drivers lack quite some bit). Anyway, just grab the livna drivers and make sure you read the documentation that accompanies the packages (yes, you may not know it, but they come with a nice little Readme) usually place at /usr/share/doc/fglrx-<version>/README or some such. You *will* have to activate the drivers by hand with a command (which I don't remember off the top of my head right now), but all necessary instructions are on the Livna's site.

Thanks, this is what I got from the 'yum' instruction

It all looks alright, just configure X (use the aticonfig generated xorg.conf file as a template) and you should be set. And see the docs for how to activate the driver (I belive you have to run something like ati-fglrx-enable or something along those lines, don't take my word for granted)

ok... almost there.

I can open the control panel, but it is still sketchy.....
