I'd like to know how yum and rpm do this
==========================

Check what is the current version of a package:

1. if it is installed or what version will be installed if you want to

2. what it will be updated to if you want to do an update

3. what its dependencies are

4. what depends on it.

5. what repositories your version where downloaded from

Does yum also have a way of querying a repository for the chaneglog of a package>

Hello:
Most of the rpm information you can determine by having a look at man rpm.
i.e what is the contents of the changelog

rpm -q --changelog

Thanks

How do you find an rpm if you only part of the name. Can yum/rpm find a file by a partial match on the name?

Hello:
You can run
yum list | grep partialname
this will search through all your enabled repos and the output will appear on the screen
or you can install
yumex
yum -y install yumex
and search that way

Is it possible to rpm or yum to install just for the curent use, in his own bin directory rather than for the whole system, which requires root permissions?
