btw, you should NEVER install tarballs. Use checkinstall instead


Can I ask why?

I usually yum everything but when it's not available through yum (and I believe the source to be secure) I'll sometimes tar it.

I found this thread looking for the uninstall command for tar.gz as I've been having a few difficulties. Maybe this is the reason why you shouldn't install? RPM's are easier to remove?

yes rpm keeps track of where everything is installed to, whereas if you manually compile and install something you often need to know where it installed the files to so you can manually remove them. however as long as you know its not a big deal, plus you can always build your own rpms

I shall be installing any tars like that then.
