Is there something special I have to do to install linux on an HP computer because I keep getting hardrive errors and cd errors. I have tried like 4 different hard drives and one other cd driv. The cd drive works after running linux ide=nodma. I had a friend who had this problem with a compaque (which is owned by HP) and he switched motherboards and swtiched back and it worked for him. what could be the problem?

What kind of hard disk problems exactly? It is not recognised or what? Do you have the same problems with all the four drives you tried?

It has a read/write error during or before the install. Yes it does it on all the drives. Windows XP installs fine on them though.

if you install from cd/dvd, the disc may have problems or the iso you downloaded (?) might be corrupt. Did you do the sha1sum check and a media check before installing?

Yes they have worked fine on other computers.
