View Full Version : Crash again

I recently had a problem where my laptop went to sleep (FC5) and would'nt wake up resulting in me turning the power off and rebooting. Thereafter I could not get the graphics mode, only a 'DOS' type login screen. After much frigging around and unable to find help to retore FC5 I re-installed FC5 loosing all data etc. Most irritating.

Now sme 3 weeks later low and behold a similar occurance. While installing software and waiting for pckage updates to finish, the laptop went into sleep mode (it was taking so long I almost joined it!) - moving the mouse, tapping keys etc. could not bring the machine back, so after trying everything I could and holding my breath I turned off the power.

Booted up and low and behold, the same problem as before - unable to access the graphics login screen and rest of the apps.

Login in in 'DOS' mode and doing ls I can see all the directories and can change into them.

However if I do 'cd Desktop' I get the following messages:
hdc: DMA interrupt recovery
hdc: lost interrupt
hdc: status error: status=0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
hdc: failed op code was:unknown
hdc: drive not ready for command
hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 {Busy}
hdc: failed opcode was :unknown
hdc: drive not ready for command
hdc: ATAPI reset complete
... and the machine hangs there.

Tapping ENTER key restore prompt [mc@localhost Desktop]$

Any ideas before I drop FC once and for all?

do you know what make and model your hard disk is?
have you downloaded from the manufacturer the utility for checking the hard drive?

what is the output of:
# /sbin/hdparm /dev/hda
# /sbin/hdparm -i /dev/hda
