su - yields:

PATH=/usr/lib/qt-3.3/bin:/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/opt/jre1.5.0_07/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/root/bin

su yields:

PATH=/usr/kerberos/sbin:/opt/jre1.5.0_07/bin:/opt/jre1.5.0_07/bin:/usr/lib/qt-3.3/bin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/opt/jre1.5.0_07/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/shawn/bin

you need to use su - to get roots path. without the dash you keep your own users path

That is what I was trying to establish if nothing was just switching users and whether or not he actually needed to have the root path..

Glad to have helped....
