when I was modifying the theme in gnome, i selected the icons to be "ikons" then everything went black. so, now i'm stuck using kde. how can I fix the gnome theme, so that I can use gnome again?

Just a wild a** guess here, but try looking at .gtkrc in the home folder. What was written there by themes?

Check this one too. .gtkrc-1.2-gnome2

gtkrc-1.2-gnome2 says:

# Autowritten by gnome-settings-daemon. Do not edit

include "/home/wiles/.gtkrc.mine"

but I could not find a gtkrc.mine or a .gtkrc

Still a WAG, but try adding the following as the file .gtkrc
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT
include "/usr/share/themes/Bluecurve/gtk/gtkrc"
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT

EDIT: I really could be barking up the wrong tree here. So go carefully.
