Simple question...is avahi a required program?

Since you had to ask, then the answer is no, you probably don't need it. You can remove it safely from the startup services. I do on my laptops.

I'd say no unless you run some Apple computers and require this protocol to talk to them.

Thanks guys, you have confirmed what I thought. I just like second opinions...they give me a warm fuzzy feeling.
