In a terminal window as root, there are a lot of files in directories like /etc Some are in green, some black and others blue. What do the colors mean, and how can I see the contents of them? I tried to get in to some (in green) with / at the beginning, or end of the file or both. All I get is "no such file or directory" or that name is not a directory. Some of you experts want to know the contents of a file and I can't do it. Just keep getting the "no such file or directory." Thanks for the basic help. :)

Well, given the fact that you seem interested in experimenting and discovering, take a look at the file DIR_COLORS in the /etc directory (use a text editor or, in a terminal, "less /etc/DIR_COLORS). :)

Try using the 'file' command as in

file /etc/passwd

which should tell you what type of file or directory you're dealing with.
