I am trying to install VideoLAN on Fedora5.

I am very new to all this, but have tracked down 2 RPMs using fedoratracker. When I try to install either of these though, they both come up with "Unable to retrieve software information".

I am connected to the Net fine. What information exactly is it trying to retrieve?

Both of these RPMs are about 6 meg. The "official" RPM on the videoLAN site is 77 meg, which I downloaded and extracted. When I try and install that though from a command line it lists about 13 missing dependancies! Do I really have to track all these down and install them? I was presuming such a large install to start with would contain any dependancies?

Thanks for any help,
Lister

Yes more than likely you will need those dependencies. But may depend on a few things but since there is 13 or so then you more than likely need them to make install esier. Have you tried yum to install apps?
yum install videolan
Agian may depend on repos you have for yum. May need to update repos first
yum update
Need to be root to use yum for most procedures.

I have installed videolan, simply with the commandline, as root: see also fedorafaq.org

rpm -Uvh http://www.fedorafaq.org/yum http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-5.rpm
yum install vlc

Perhaps you have to resolve one dependency: dvdcss. you can download the rpm at the videlan website
