after updating, usually in grub i see a new entry for a differnet FC5. is that the new kernel? and, i tried booting into the newest entry and i usually get errors when doing most things. should i be booting into the newest version and fix the problems everytime?

Yes, that is the new kernel. I actually put an exclude entry in my yum.conf file so that the kernel doesn't get updated.

If I have a kernel problem, I will run a yum update kernel...But otherwise, I just leave the kernel alone.

If you want to use the new kernel, you do have to fix those problems. Generally speaking, if you had to compile a video driver or a network driver for your system, it's kernel specific. So yes, after updating to a new version of the kernel, you usually have to recompile those other modules, etc.
