I have FC5 installed with a previously working GUI. Then I set a screen resolution that causes a completely fuzzy screen; its impossible to use the GUI with it. How does one recover from this? I'm writing from another computer, since the FC5 system is unusable.

1. Boot your FC5 machine into text mode (at grub menu highlight the kernel you want, press e then enter "linux 3" at the end of kernel line without quotes, hit enter, hit b to boot the edited kernel line - this will boot you to run level 3 for this boot no permanent changes will be done and on reboot you will enter run level 5 as normal)
2. $ cd /etc/X11
3. $ ls xorg.conf*
4. if you see a file called xorg.conf.bak check its date by running $ ll xorg.conf.bak (it might be the backup copy that was made before you changed your resolution). If it was created at the time you made the resolution change then you can rename it to xorg.conf as root
$ su -
# cd /etc/X11
# rm xorg.conf
# mv xorg.conf.bak xorg.conf
# shutdown -r now (command to restart your machine)
Should be back to old settings in GUI

5. If xorg.conf.bak file doesn't exist then recreate xorg.conf file as root
$ su -
# cd /etc/X11
# mv xorg.conf xorg.conf.messedup
# system-config-display
(select the proper resolution)
# shutdown -r now
should be running GUI with proper settings now
if all works fine on reboot then remove xorg.conf.messedup
