View Full Version : on-board sound

I have an e-Machine with on-board sound. When I try to play
music or video files in xmms, mplayer, etc, I get an error
saying the application could not open the sound device.
I noticed my apps appear to be trying to access /dev/dsp
which does not exist on my system.

I guess what I'm looking for is a way to create a sound device and
point it to my onboard sound.

Any suggestions? I'd rather not buy a new card.
Thanks.

do:
/sbin/MAKEDEV -d /etc/udev/devices/ sound

Thanks for your quick reply, shams.

Okay, I ran the command. I also ran it without the -d option. When I point
my players (xmms and mplayer) to /dev/dsp they still give the error
unable to open audio device.

When I look at the permissions, the device(s) appears to be writable
to root only. I've tried using chmod to make the permissions to /dev/dsp
755, but I can't seem to change them, even as root.
