Anyone? that is the exact same problem I have.
I've already had to reinstall once because I could not find any answer to a different problem.

when the soundcard auto detection came up the first time, I accidentally hit "no" when it asked if I heard the sample sound.
Now I can't fix it.

Just run "system-config-soundcard" again.

No luck, and no sound.
I copied and pasted that into a terminal, and this was the result:
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device
cat: /proc/asound/pcm: No such file or directory

the computer got really sluggish and I got the exact same reuslt out of the soundcard detection screen. there are no options to select in the "default PCM device" box.
I know the card works, it ran before a bad Linuxant driver caused it to not boot.

This is from the kudzu -p command:

class: AUDIO
bus: PCI

desc: "Rockwell International Unknown device 4310"

subVendorId: 1235
subDeviceId: 4310
pciType: 1
pcidom: 0
pcibus: 1
pcidev: 9
pcifn: 0

I have no idea what to make of this information.

The problem was resolved when I ran a system update. The 2157 kernel is installed, and the soundcard works. The modem half does not, as I have not found effective drivers for it. The Linuxant drivers do not work with it. Instead, they cause the system to hang on boot.
I do welcome suggestions for the modem part, but they are not required. Wehn I get a good sound card, I will rid from this world one more Conexant nightmare.
