I've added a line in fstab to automatically mount ntfs. Right now the ntfs partition is in "read only" state.

/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows1 ntfs ro,umask=0222,user,gid=users 0 0

How to change the line to so that I can read and write as well...?

I thought linux software is by necessity open-source?

You could try captive NTFS
http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/

You'll need a copy of ntfs.sys, ntoskrnl.exe from your windows partitions, Wine and possibly some other components. I've not tried this myself, but have heard some good reports about it.
