View Full Version : Memory problems

So I installed Fedora4 on my machine about a month ago, and overall I'm very happy with my Linux experience.

But I am having one little problem. I have 512 mb of RAM, and when I am running firefox, the text editor and the system monitor it takes up 448 mb! Obviously, I have a memory leak or something similar somewhere, but I don't have any games or other such programs on my machine, so I can't see where the problem is coming from.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to hunt down and fix the problem? I'm used to memory problems from my windows days (I once had Windows ME), but even Windows ME was never this bad.

Most of the problem seems to be from the Firefox bin. It's still pretty bad, but my machine is running much more smoothly now.

Sorry for the double post.

Linux will use all your RAM, that's normal. Only worry when you use all your swap and you hard drive is going nuts shuffling data back and forth from memory.

Linux is doing memory management right, unused RAM is wasted ram,
this post from another Linux forum explains it pretty well:

Ah, now that would explain it. Thanks.
