Yesterday I successfully installed FC5 on a brand-new Dell PowerEdge 1800 with RAID level1. I configured the machine over a couple of hours, all was well, and I shut the machine down for the night.

I restarted the machine this morning and everything looked great as the various processes loaded successfully. The only service that failed to start was smartd and right after the system started (or tried to start) the HAL daemon the screen went blank.

I reinstalled FC5 and the same thing happened when the system booted for the first time.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Erik

Try bypassing these services from starting. Maybe try a Knoppix disk (or related Linux bootup disk) and go into the system files and folders (/etc/init*, /etc/rc*, and the inetd and xinetd directories) and try disabling the services from the outside OS.

Or maybe there's a way to bypass processes while booting, in the first place? I dunno what that key combination is. Someone help me out.
