View Full Version : Book writing software?

I'm writing a couple of books over the summer, and I'm looking for a good way to typeset them.

The trick is, the family desktop only has windows on it, and I can't really spend 8hrs a day uncomfortably pecking away at my little laptop (FC5).

I do know LaTeX and emacs (I'm a math and physics major), although I'm finding it much harder to get things all happy and without errors on windows.

Anyway, I imagine it would be much easier to convert from that to openoffice than vice versa, so that's probably how I want to write it.

Does anyone have recommendations about what programs to use that would work under linux and windows? Also, with something like LaTeX, good templates or such? (One work is a novel and the other is non-fiction, though not really something I want to be formatted like a dissertation.)

I believe Lyx (http://www.lyx.org) runs on Windows.
Lyx is wysiwyg LaTex.
