Hi,
I came to Fedora from Ubuntu Linux and I am not a very experienced linux user.
After a fresh install, I run the package updater, but it is taking ages just to download the packages and I have a fast connection.
Is that normal? I heard it could be due to some security settings, but I know very little about it...
Furthermore, how do I add some extra software (I mainly need kdevelop, some g++/gcc ,R cran and other scientific software)?
Probably there is some online resource for this, so if you can address me to that, it would help!
Cheers

those two are very good starting points for any questions that might arise during your first steps with FC

Alright. I installed Yumex and I feel reasonably at home.
Actually the system has more up-to-date software than Ubuntu.
I would like to know which repositories apart from the official ones, are reasonably safe to add.
I am asking because I need to install basically R cran (http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/R/CRAN/) and Kdevelop for my work+other scientific apps.
Then I do not need much else.
Any advice?
Cheers

read this:

use the RPMforce repos or livna, not both..
and try to avoid ATrpms too

Kdevelop is in Fedora Core, R is in Fedora Extras. You don't need any additional repos for those.
