View Full Version : Strange Nvidia and GTK problem

Hi people,
I recently decided to try using my nvidia card to its full potential and installed the latest kmod-nvidia for the latest kernel (2.6.16-1.2111_FC5) from the livna repository as I have also installed FC5 again.
My computer (or should I say monitor) has never got on with the nvidia drivers http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.lynch30/problem.html

but this driver works fine, I get the nvidia logo and then rhgb starts.. and then stops..
None of the GTK rendered parts appear! Weird huh? The computer is still there though - it responds to suspend and other external commands. The X server is still working also, I can move the mouse too.
When rhgb is disabled my system grinds to a halt at GDM.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this sort of problem and if there is any solution apart from wait for new driver..
I have included my xorg.conf and the last log where I had the driver enabled as attachements

Thankyou in advance

I have the same problem. Same kernel and kmod installed via Yum from Livna. I have run "yum update" on the machine and everything is current, but to no avail. What makes it even more frustrating is at times when I reboot the machine it will boot all the way into Gnome. Sometimes KDE loads and sometimes it doesn't. I can log into the PC remotely via XDMCP and get a full Gnome session, but the local desktop is frozen solid. I cannot even CTRL-ALT-F1 into another session. If I change the runlevel to 3, the machine boots fine to a command prompt.

When I check the GDM logs (:0.log.txt in the attachments below), there is an interesting entry regarding requesting an insufficient memory window.

Requesting insufficient memory window!: start: 0xf4000000 end: 0xf5ffffff size 0xf7710000

I was really digging my FC5 installation as I finally got dual head working, but boy I am beginning to get a bit frustrated. Any help would be appreciated :)

I have no idea if this will work but I usually remove the rhgb from boot parameters. I seem to recall reading somewhere that nvidia used to have issues with it.

it may be your matrox card is the problem. have a look at this:

and scroll all the way to the bottom--very last post. If it doesn't make sense, post back,,,,

Mine doesn't get as far as writing gdm logs unfortunately, even with rhgb disabled.

Thanks solarisman! It appears you may be on to something.

I just setup a single head config file for Xorg using only the Nvidia driver and the machine boots fine. It appears it is definitely something with the MGA driver. What is odd, is I had dualhead working firn for weeks, and all of a sudden it stopped working.

Looks like I have a bit of sleuthing to do.

Sorry Craig, that I cannot offer any other assistance.

Would this sort of entry affect the x server starting with the nvidia driver enabled?
This is a GDM log without the nvidia drivers
The log (if it gets that far) is the same with the nvidia drivers.

This shouldn't affect the driver right?
