For some reason, when gconf creates a temporary directory in /tmp to use for the gnome session, it gives ownership of the directory to 1000:1000, rather than dan:dan (or 500:500, the correct uid:gid for the user/group dan). As a result, nothing works properly when I log in as dan. I can log into the terminal as root and change the permissions for the directory, and everything works fine. However, I want to find out how to make gconf create a directory with the right permissions.
