What kind of "multimedia"?

What purpose?

How many users?

well its just for mp3's, avi's, mpgs. The reason is for soly for educational purposes. and as for the users, its really only for personal accomplishment, so 1 user (which is me). however I have the bandwidth to support a couple hundred users.

Are you trying to set up an internet streaming media server? or a local system that will be used from in front of your computer?

The easiest way to do what you want to do is to use the Apache web server. Add the folder containing the multimedia content to the DocRoot (or point to it with a symlink). Apache will automatically list the contents of folders (unless this feature is disabled) if it cannot find an index/default file to serve.

what do you mean by DocRoot and symlink?

DocumentRoot is where Apache finds the files that it is supposed to serve.

A symbolic link is a shortcut to another place. The item appears to be present in one folder, but is actually present in another.

You can create a symbolic link by:

ln -s /path/to/file filename
