I recently ran a Yum update to all my software and upon completion, and a reboot of the machine... GNOME crashed... No sounds, theme is different, menus and bars and desktop shortcuts are gone... No icons in the toolbars at all... Can't access themes. I reinstalled the OS to try and fix it, which it did... Ran the Yum update again... And another crash. What can I do to fix it, and prevent it? Thanks.

Well, I'm running KDE and never play with Gnome, but if I had a similar problem, I would certainly check which updates might have been involved and exclude them until I could find a workaround. The update shouldn't have required a reboot unless it's for a new kernel, so there's something in the 'gnome-whatever' programs that's giving you fits. You might want to run "rpm -qa --last | tac " to get a list of the updates from the oldest to the newest. That should help you analyze the problem. If you want to know about 'yum --exclude=packagename update', check 'man yum' .
