A couple of nights ago I updated some stuff using yumex (on FC4) as I do every few days. All went well. The next evening I booted up, no issues, desktop (Gnome) came up. I fired gaim up and firefox. Half an hour later I was switching between 1 of my 4 desktops noticed the was a blank area on my menu bar where 'Applications' ,'Places','Desktop' normally are. Now I know for a fact I hadn't done anything. This FC4 install has been up and running for months without any problems (apart from the 'no fonts' pango pain in firefox when updating).

If anyone has the same dissappearing menu problem, I googled for this solution which worked. Open terminal and enter these 3 lines:

gnome-session-remove gnome-panel
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
gnome-panel &

Any ideas why this happened. Am I alone to experience this.

Sorry I don't really know if this will work, but if you want to you could try restarting your computer, if what you said is true about it being on for months. Or if you want more help you could update to fedora core 5
