Hi, my XP machine's drive just kicked the bucket and I need to recover data. So I used the FC4 rescue CD to boot into a linux ram drive. The thing is that I have no clue what's installed in that ram drive and everything seems to be incomplete. I got the CD rom working after doing an mknod /dev/hdc. I also got linux to read fine from the faulty NTFS partition. So... I want to do a tar cvf -|ssh root@otherbox 'gzip > /mnt/backups/today.tar.gz' but freakin' ssh doesn't work... 'I get a Host key verification failed' message.

Oops, I just tried it again and it worked. It seems like the first virtual terminal (Alt-F1) is a console and not a proper tty. Using the second virtual terminal (Alt-F2) works fine. It looks like I just lost some emails and Explorer cache due to bad sectors. With windows alone I would never have been able to read the contents of the drive.
