View Full Version : FC5 Slow...

Hello,

Have been using FC since day one, Red Hat before then. I'm not here to bash FC...

Anyway, the last 3 months I have been experimenting Gentoo and now it is time to give FC5 a shot since it is new. I like new... :D There is a terrible performance difference between the two distos. FC 5 is very laggy compared gentoo and the boot time is almost double.

Does anyone have any performance tweaks that they would like to suggest? Outside of recompiling everything... I am using the system as a workstation for development and day-to-day putzing.

To quicken boot up time, you could disable the startup of all the unnecessary serives you'll never use. Have a look at:

I already do this as a starndard practice to any linux system I run.

Thanks though...

I solve the the booting problem by only rebooting every month or so. :) Even a minute more to startup isn't all that much to me, though I'm interested in ways to speed up boot time.

As to the laggy part, how much free RAM do you have?

The system...

2.8 GHz Hyper-Threaded
1 Gig of RAM @ 800 MHz
3 7200 RPM Hard Drives
64MB GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x

I have over 512 of free RAM but what I am looking for are solutions that would work on all systems.

Something must be chewing cycles. I've an 833Mhz with 1GB ram,
(also under vmware) and FC5 is just fine. Is it getting hammered
with network traffic? There's a tool around called procmeter that
uses darn near all of /proc. (procmeter is a graphical system monitor).
Google could find it.

Pull the network cable, shut daemons down one by one...you'll find
whatever it is that has the sys by short-n-curlies.

No, that isn't it... checked all that...

Compared to other distos, gentoo inparticular, fedora launches applications quite a bit slower.
