I searched the forums but maybe my query was improperly worded. How can I get Linux to boot to the GUI via a command line?

edit your /etc/inittab and change this line

id:3:initdefault:
to

id:5:initdefault:

you need to modfy /etc/inittab

The default text app is probably vi

so, vi /etc/inittab

scroll down to the line above

hit INSERT and you should see INSERT in lower left. make the change

Hit escape to get out of INSERT mode.

type in :wq (that's colon then w and then q)

That writes the files and quits out

Then reboot
