my hard drive is only 4.5 gigs with only 20% free space and I would like to install the updates are they going to fill my hard drive?

Probably not ;-)

There may be a couple of hundred megabytes of updates to install - but once they are installed, you can delete the rpm packages from /var/cache/yum (from memory). After deleting the RPM updates, the amount of free space should almost be the same as before the updates.

I highly recommend updating pup/yumex/yum at least weekly - lots of important bug fixes are fixed shortly after a new release (eg FC5).

The only caveat is kernels - older kernels may still reside in /lib. You can uninstall them using rpm -Uvh kernel-2.6.???? (fill in the version number). Make sure yaboot is pointing to the latest kernel though - and it's usually a good idea to have two kernels installed (one as a backup).
