I assume that the smartd is for harddrive monitoring and such... it fails everytime i boot up and shut down... is there a way to fix this? or if its not needed can i disable so fedora does attempt to start it or shut it down?

Typically I just disable the service.

chkconfig smartd off

There isa config file, /etc/smartd.conf. There are man pages on smartd.conf and smartd. It's possible that if you set up the config properly, it would work. I've never got it to work.
